What is Impotence – Definition, Causes, Diagnosis and how to take action

Male Impotence: A Story of its Own

A man’s potency is a sensitive subject, particularly when there are problems. A man may be confident and even boast impressive muscles, but impotence (often called erectile dysfunction) is a condition that makes even the strongest of men feel vulnerable.

With their big testosterone-driven egos, they rarely admit and discuss this and instead chose to suffer in silence. This makes the collection of statistics and treatments difficult.

What is Impotence?

The free medical dictionary defines impotence, often called erectile dysfunction, as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection long enough to engage in sexual intercourse. Exporing this further, impotence may not only refer to the inability to have an erection, but also the inability to experience pleasure and mutual sexual stimuli. Each can actually occur without the other taking place.

Men can normally remain potent to a considerably old age, but it is a fact that even young men in their early 20s can experience performance problems. As a rule of thumb, potency is directly correlated to the amount of sexual activity an adult male has. In other words, the less sex, the higher the risk of impotence – especially when the individual masturbates exessively.

Causes and Diagnosis of Impotence

There are three main types of causes for impotence (see my page on causes here) and it is most formally diagnosed by using the so-called The International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) Questionnaire. Click here (still under construction;-)) to complete the self-diagnosis questionnaire.

The Taboo of Potency Problems

Although rather a delicate subject, solutions will only arise once this problem is discussed. It is recommended that a specialist is consulted, for there may be underlying health concerns that need to be addressed. Also (and just as importantly), potency issues will have a negative effect on a relationship as long as they remain unresolved. If a physical illness is ruled out, there are other realistic treatment options. Ranging from exercises to supplements, a great number of life changes are possible. Synthetic potency enhancers are available through a doctor’s note in Germany, however there may be a range of side effects. Interestingly enough, these very same substances can be cheaply purchased via the Internet. However, there is a risk involved here. Studies have shown that ingredients may be substituted and even harmful levels of heavy metals can be present. Not only is the efficacy of these substances called into question, but they may very well be unhygienic and even dangerous.

Consult a Doctor or Pharmacist

One should never take any synthetic medication without a doctor’s advice. Should there be contraindications with other medications or existing medical conditions, the results can be fatal. While the effectiveness of synthetic enhancers is not questioned, it should be noted that any side effects can remain as long as the chemicals are active within the blood stream; up to thirty-six hours in some cases. Ironically, this can detract from the benefits of the medication itself.

No Side-Effects Natural Nutrients are Recommended

Some natural enhancers have been shown to have no side effects. Arginine is an amino acid, which is the key ingredient to Nitric Oxide (NO), which the body uses to regulate blood flow – everywhere in the body, including the penis! NO has been extremely well researched in hundreds if not thousands of studies. The team, which found out its usefulness to the human body was even awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1998.

ARGININE ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH
Early studies concluded that a dose of 5,000mg per day of Arginine does not have a satisfactory effect on treating erectile dysfunction as only 31% of subjects reported improvement1.

However, when the Arginine was combined with 80mg of Pine Bark Extract per day, even a smaller dose of 1.7g Arginine per day effectively allowed 37 out of 40 (92.5%) of participating men to enjoy a normal erection again2.

These two nutrients reinforce each other and make for an erection-boosting “Dream Team”.

The best and most effective alternative to the synthetic ED tablets are the natural circulation (and therefore erection) enhancer  Arginine in combination with pine bark extract.

My logic was that you cannot argue against a Nobel Prize as a rubber stamp. Arginine’s effectiveness as a erectile enhancer and a huge amount of other metabolic processes is undisputed and it has no side effects. In the UK these dedicated Arginine supplements with a sufficient dose and pine park extract are few and far between. However, on the continent especially in Germany and Italy there are lots of natural supplements available for erectile function; “food supplements for special medical purposes”.
